Note on "Pattern 1" – The "A, B, C, A1, B1, C1, Interlude, A2" pattern is identical with the pattern of the Creation Week of Genesis 1:1-2:3. As the original creation week has a central section on the creation of the sun, moon and stars, so the central section of Revelation features a woman clothed with the sun, standing on the moon and having a crown of stars on her head. Likewise in Revelation, the Churches which have "light" as their main feature seem to be related to the first day of creation, and that the final section, the New Jerusalem, embodies the return of rest and the beginning of an eternal Sabbath. Besides the pattern of Creation Week, this same pattern seems to follow the Jewish Liturgical year. See: the Feast of Tabernacles/Feast of Dedication/Feast of Lights (A, A1, A2); Unleavened Bread/Passover/Pentecost (B, B1); Feast of Trumpets/Day of Atonement (C, C1).
Note on "Pattern 2: Chiasm" – Students of the structure of the Book of Revelation have long noted what appears to be a chiastic pattern. The key concepts seem to move outward from the central verses of the book, Revelation 12:10, 11, in concentric patterns. It is obvious that the first section (Churches) and the final section (New Jerusalem) are parallel; both describe God's covenant people, the former depicts them as they are now and the latter as they will be after the sin problem is resolved. The Trumpets and the Bowls are obviously parallel, the former presenting preliminary and partial judgments against those outside the covenant and the latter, final and total judgments. The Seals and Babylon relate to the covenant from the perspective of the saints; in the former, the Lamb reveals what the covenant people can expect between the inauguration and consummation of the kingdom and in the latter, the covenant people are vindicated as judgment is pronounced upon their oppressors. Again, everything swivels around the central section.
Note on the "Interludes" – The Book of Revelation is pregnant with the number "seven," linking it with God's teleological purposes, Creation Week and the Jewish liturgical year. Yet, scholars have identified eight major sections, and the sections seem to have eight parts! What if the structure of the Book as a whole is similar to the structure of the Seals and the Trumpets? In these sections, there are seven numbered parts with an interlude between the 6th and 7th! The Interludes seem to recapitulate what was going on in the sections from a divine perspective, just as the interlude to the Book itself, recapitulates from a divine perspective the whole thrust of the Book.
Note on the "Blessings" – There are exactly seven Blessings, or Beatitudes, in the Book of Revelation (Marked "Blessings 1...7") and these are placed strategically throughout. Notice that the first appears in the Introduction, and the final two in the Conclusion. Of special interest is the fact that there are no Blessings in the first three sections, but each of the next three sections have a blessing located in the Interlude part prior to the seventh part. The only other Blessing is found in the central part of the "Interlude 1000 Years" section. The "Blessings" are helpful in establishing the pattern of the major sections, if this analysis is correct. The location of the Blessing in the central part of the Interlude section (B5) shows that this section differs from the other sections and may be at least consistent with the view that this Interlude section recapitulates the major action of the entire Book. It is significant that this Blessing is located in the part of the Interlude section which features the 1000 year reign of the saints and the destruction of Satan! In other words, this section (central to the Interlude) recapitulates not only the entire Interlude, but possibly the entire Book of Revelation. Consider the important relationship between this section in which Blessing 5 appears and the central section of the Book (Rev. 12:10, 11): In the central verses of the Book, Satan is cast out of heaven, and in the central part of the Interlude Section the saints reign 1000 years followed by Satan's demise. What occurred at Calvary results in the saints' rule and the eventual destruction of Satan.
Since this is a tentative proposal, we would welcome your observations and suggestions.
