Why do we use the BCE / CE
date designations?
On the Jesus Institute Forum (JIF) web
site, most of us prefer to use the BCE / CE (Before the common era / common
era) dating designations rather than BC / AD (Before Christ / Anno domini,
'year of our Lord') designations. Here are a few suggested reasons:
-
To discard the AD (Anno domini, 'year
of our Lord') designation – The
historical Jesus of Nazareth by his own teachings and actions would have
explicitly disavowed the various crimes against humanity which have been
committed in his name, supposedly under his Lordship. These include crimes
by people in all the major divisions of Christianity against the earlier
people of the Book, the Jewish people, against Islamic peoples, against
indigenous peoples and other cultures, against fellow Christians, and also
against various dissenters, freethinkers, and nonbelievers.
-
Also to discard the AD designation
– The dark record of our human depravity in general over the last 2 millenia
do not evidence 'the kingdom' that Jesus envisaged. This is not to deny
that individuals of every persuasion and ethnicity have embodied in their
lives and accomplishments for the bettering of the world the essentials
of that kingdom.
-
To embrace the CE (common era) designation
– Jesus of Nazareth (whom we confess to be the foretold Messiah, the promised
Christ) and his teachings, belong not only to Christians but also to the
Jewish people, and to peoples everywhere. What he was and what he stood
for is the common heritage of all humankind, not just of one world
religion, Christianity, which in its historical and current state with
its many sins of commission and omission is a dismal caricature of what
he intended. (Here we freely include ourselves).
-
To embrace BCE (before the common era)
rather than BC (before Christ) – Even in nomenclature we aspire to
refrain from assuming our conclusion about Jesus' messiahship a priori,
but seek at our best to use historical exegesis to work toward the One
whom we believe fulfilled the Law, the prophets, and the Covenant.
-
The BCE / CE designations are already widely
in use by many people who do not necessarily consider themselves to be
part of the Christian or Western tradition. We wish to communicate to these
as well.
